...hating on the school with the "R", losing my phone, and venturing into business...

I lost my freakin Globe phone. An 8250 and the guy who picked it up didn't even bother try to give it back. As Kali said, "ang skwater na ng Pilipinas, pati sim card wala na pambili mga magnanakaw". Fine, my phone was not "stolen", but it's in the hands of someone who doesn't own it, and it's not like he borrowed it.

Anyway, still dreaming of my HTC.

Atty. Suarez and Associates

Led by Makati's pride, (soon to be Atty.) Jason Suarez, we've cooked up a new business venture that's a surefire hit...

A massage parlor. Damn. The info I will divulge with the majority votes of the stakeholders. But as of the moment, you'll only get to hear it if we drink @ Brew on Fridays.

 The Xavier House and Ateneo

One of the few times I read the newspaper, and they're making headlines once again... Well, actually, Benjo was the first one who gave news about the big blue school that starts, as Imon said, with the letter "R".

Anyway, news article was saying that the Xavier House in Sta. Ana has been sold to SM, and it will be demolished to give way to a new mall. Fr. Reuter, one of the "living legends of the 1986 People Power Revolution" who has been living there for over 40 years, said that the Fr. Provincial apologetically informed him of the possible sale of the property, citing "financial reasons". Fr. Reuter seemed to me as if he was defending the Fr. Provincial's stance on the sale when he said in the article something about Jesuits not "loving" money, but rather, "needing" the money right now, that they are selling it not because of the "vice of loving money" but rather because of the "need" for it. For more reference, it's in The Philippine Daily Inquirer. I'm not sure if it's up in the website though.

I'm drawn to either of the two situations:

1. The Ateneo is full of selfish individuals who are all talk about their accomplishments and success in life, but don't care about anything else but themselves. With a bunch of rich people who came from the school, alleged bribery in games, countless allegations of pirating players for the University games, and a tuition fee that could feed a whole rural population, I doubt that THE Ateneo is lacking funds. But then again, these people are no longer studying in the THE Ateneo, so why the hell would they care, right? Or if they did, why keep a historical piece of land if you can make more money out of it by building a new mall, right?

2. The Jesuits have actually lost themselves to the "vice" of "loving money". So let's not blame it on the alumni. Probably MVP donated more than just a building for the school. Maybe FG gave his lunch money to build a new court or something in the name of the school. Can I blame the Jesuits, then, for asking more than what is being given to them by the ever-loving alumni?

It's just too hard to fathom that they "need" money THAT bad to sell a piece of national history. Yes, recession's a bitch, and I may not understand the whole money thing going on, but damn, are the Jesuits going THAT badly to be THIS desperate?

  2. re: xavier and ateneo

another situation is they really need the money. according to a friend who is now in arvissu (pre-novitiate), jesuit houses do not meddle with the affairs of their schools. if this is so, then, ateneo is a separate entity. so whatever the school earns, it earns for itself. with the present state of the economy here and abroad, plus the fact that vocations are not that strong anymore, the money is needed for the expenses of the congregation. (just another perspective) :)

  3. ayun, as i said naman di ba, i don't know how the money thing works...

anyway, though they are separate entities, can't a brother help a brother out? when one is in need and the other is in surplus, why not share the wealth, rather than sacrifice a part of the country's history?

  5. good question. did not understand that part so well myself. maybe one of the policies or rules of the congregation. if it were, then, it is actually followed to the letter.

  6. grabe naman. what's the difference of money coming from "family" (i.e. former Ateneans) and money from Henry Sy as business venture?

Basta. I think "history" is too much of a sacrifice considering they do have other means.
